Mort Certaine

It was the endless night
Skylines aflame
Brilliant orange glow
Washing over
Everything in sight

The flags stood still
As did the people
Amazed by the haze
Then, one by one
They fell

Children fled outward
As buildings became
Tiny particules of dust
Sparrows mourned
On snapped powerlines

O, to depart
on a night
such as this!

With fire bleeding out
Each dying eye
Awaiting the sunlight
No one would see
Ever again
Awaiting the awakening
That forever
Is denied
By death.
