Unrequited Love
I've been in love so many times
I've lost each one to passion crimes
With all of my heart, to the core of my soul
I love you and now I feel free to let you know
The barrier of marriage has fallen to the ground
Now friendship's all that's left to seek a way around
The question is so hard to ask
Once more my friendship is a mask
Concealing from you my inner most hope
While friendship is strung up on the end of a rope
Am I betraying your trust by following my heart?
Are my feelings something I should never impart?
If I hide this, is it a lie?
Will my love for you live or die?
Is it better to leave, to run away
Without letting you know my heart wants me to stay?
A lifetime of dreams keep telling me I must go
But I can't walk away without letting you know
So with one breath I'll say goodbye
And with the next I'll start to cry
For when I tell you what my heart feels
Our friendship will suffer for all it reveals
But this is my fate, to never have love returned
I am unworthy of yours, a love I have not earned

Poetryman, no pain no gain, if you don't say it you will never know; all sorts of cliche runs through my head. Unspoken, unheard, unshared...you will go on without ever knowing. Your poem is very good though.

Well, I let her know, she just wanted to be friends. I gave her the letter that contained the 3 poems, Hidden From Me, Crossroads and Loving You. I should have approached her sooner, in a different way. She was already involved in a relationship and I blew it. Live and learn.

Yes, I am not one to make up poems. I only write when inspired and rarely write fantasy that isn't based in reality.

A story through the ages; do you ask and threaten what you have or not and just wonder if it would have worked? You capture it well. Seeing as this was 10 years ago, I hope you took the plunge and it worked for you!

Well, I tried. I told her I was unable to go on as friends. I stopped talking to her for about a year. It's a long story that my poems tell better than I can remember, but eventually we became friends. I consider her a friend still, but as time has passed, we have gone in different directions. It's all just another page in my book, actually about 40 pages worth of poems, but in the end the story is the same as it ever was... jj

I have had a lifetime of what if's. was very shy when I was younger. now I have a pile of "I know, I Know" and neither one is much fun...
