SPOTS and STRIPES (with LunasChild8 )

I sit up in my place high above the sky
Some have wondered if I ever wanted to be the Sun that brightens up a day
I’m proud that I radiate light in the darkest of nights
Down below I see something pick up the pace.

Not much interests me when I’m content being up in the heavens
Yet this sleek and quick form rouses my curiosity
Despite the exertion, I can hear its heartbeat dance to a steady rhythm
I notice that the figure runs in the direction of my luminosity.

It’s no strange occurrence to have Earth’s creatures follow my light
Yet never have I seen my reflection in such marvelous eyes
The movements are quick and graceful as if itching for flight
An animal’s shriek cuts off abruptly as the figure catches its prize.

A whim passes through my mind, leaving even me surprised
Yet I fall from my home without looking back
I must meet this creature with the brilliant eyes
I stand behind it and see luscious locks of black.

I realize that it’s a beautiful tigress occupied with her kill
Her physique is impressive, and I admire her beauty
She still hasn’t noticed me yet, and I’m caught with the thrill
Will she ever notice me?

The way, the shine of moon, is ever there,
My time, a tiger’s pace, seems never done.
To hunt, to seek a mate; a tiger’s tear,
And all the while I find no younger one.

A tiger lives by only what she sees,
To capture prey: to romp & stomp & chomp.
Perhaps the quest goes deeper than the trees,
Where mangrove roots grow tangled in the swamp.

A tiger has no little self to speak,
Watch over me, you follow on the run.
Are you the purr, the lick across my cheek,
Are you my very own?  My lunar sun?

The spots I see upon your face illume,
Must be the tracks I leave across the moon!

Author's Note
This collaboration between myself and my moonchild friend LunasChild8 continues where her recent competition Dear me, From me ended, with poetry from each participant to their younger self (the inner child). She was kind to ask if I wanted to join her on a co-write, and I chose to speak from my tiger spirit guide to the moon. Luna starts the piece (italics freeverse), and I conclude it (sonnet, plain font).  We might continue the story in a future co-written chapter/episode.
