Image for the poem He Smiled

He Smiled

The mask I choose to provide
Prevent you seeing the tears inside
A comedic pretence of madness
Camouflages any and all inner sadness
I party on like uncorked champagne
Never wanting to expose the real pain
Like Shrek's mule, everyone's jester and fool
Showing depression or anxiety is never cool
Makes you laugh to belly knots
You never saw suicidal thoughts
Always smiling like an everyday dawn
But, heads now down and oven gas is on

We never seen this coming
He always seemed happy go lucky
The life and soul of any party
A born entertainer
He should have been on the stage

He was - The last one leaving Dodge
