No Quick Fix ( I Am Not A Hero)

We missed again,,
our window
to re-connect
has passed.

Another event,
and you are racing out the door.

So busy these days,
that an invisible wedge
has positioned itself
between us.

I snuck into the room,
as instructed,
my hand across your back,
while you slept.

A wave of anxiety overcomes me
at the thought of penetrating you.

It never was an issue,
until the alcohol was gone.

And I can't bear to leave you unsatisfied,
contributing to another resentment of me.

In some ways, it is a relief
that I didn't have to disappoint you.

In honour of us,
it can only be a rough patch,
because there is something worth saving.

Author's Note
Addictions and relationships.  As the partner of a recovering addict, the promise of a happy ending is never immediate.  Very big changes occur, and I am seeing first-hand that our existence is a work-in-progress.
