May

I'm waitin' on my summer day -
she's hummin', smokin' and steamin',
and if we could see what she was smokin'
it'd be a Newport short.

She's got haystack hair
and gnat eyelashes,
and curves like a river.

I'm waitin' on Miss May -
she gon' wrap me up so strong,

and let me sweat out all the wrong
while she carries me right

to the moon-glazed waves
of the blue buzzin' night,
and that river gone black;
that T-shirt gone tight,

all soaked -
kissin' my ribs,
clingin',

I says let the mosquitoes nip.
I'll spend lifetimes on the bank
with May,
just singin'.
