Immediately
Birdie knew something was wrong
The neighborhood was sick with sour milk
It tasted like atrocity

Black and white cruisers
In every alley, on every block
Cops throttled their steering wheels
Choking on sadness and horrified
Even the Jump-Out Boys had blistered red eyes

Urgent radios crackled frantic codes
Chopper blades pounded the air
They were looking for Gabriel Cardona
The fucking degenerate pig
Pierced a ten-year-old girl with pike and wrath

We used to see her a lot walking Birdie
She lived about a block away
Playing outside
Happy

Before
She was rushed to the ICU
Before
That Sunday
She was raped

We were skirting a little wooded area
When we met, he had a dog too
I can recall how his face looked
In perfect surgical detail
When he told me they got him
His granite eyes were blurry and exhausted

He brutally raped a little girl
He said brutally again
And again, he said
Brutally

I may have said it loud… then, and again
Maybe someone left flowers on his mother’s doorstep
They probably sat there for weeks
Trampled and dead
He can’t sit alone forever
Someday a lady in black will come
Taking him to the shadows

Author's Note
I have spent the better part of a week on this. It was extremely difficult to work on. I felt that it must be done. There is a very fine line between to much detail and enough detail to invoke the intended response when dealing with a subject such as this.
This guy was convicted last week after a plea deal. He plead guilty on two charges of 2nd degree attempted sexual assault of a child. He could be sentenced 1 - 50 on each count. He was literary caught in the act by the girl's mother and originally charged with 1st degree sexual assault of a child, that offence carries a max sentence of life in prison.

I have not seen this little girl since that day. I see her family occasionally, they look as if they now live in a state of perpetual sadness.
