Amazon Compassion (Roman Charity)

Inspired by a famous photo of a female soldier nursing her wounded foe

On battlefield’s misery
The amazon looked upon
Her wounded enemy
With eyes of sympathy

Mother warrior laid down her sword
Lifting wounded head to her breast
Whilst angry waring legions carried on
She nursed her wounded foe

Her warrior’s spirit yielded
To her maternal instinct
Mars raged, Venus praised
For death would not win the day
For maternal love defeated hate

Author's Note
The above poem was inspired by a photo of ‘Roman Charity’ that took place on a battlefield during the Sino-Vietnamese War. In the midst of the battle, a female Vietnamese soldier gave comfort to a wounded Chinese soldier with milk from her breast. History has been punctuated by these acts of ‘Roman Charity’ where in a time of crisis, a lactating woman will offer her breast as comfort and nutrition to someone in peril. Such actions have been explained as instinctive, rather than deliberate.
A photo of this act of maternal instinct is included in an attachment.
