Well Written is Well Fed

With nothing on my plate, but to sit and write poetry all day
I pray wisdom and wit or at least something profound to say

A life of leisure I’m sure to the masses and the herds
Though endless frustration when I can’t find the words

Elizabeth Browning said, “How do I love thee, let me count the ways”
I’ll count too writing my poems and struggling through countless days

The Bible says, “If a man does not work, neither let him eat”
Lord, let me labor over each line until this poem is complete

I will quote scripture and other poets much brighter than me
Put their words in my mouth because with them I do agree

I’ll spend hours agonizing over the construction of each and every line
Through clever manipulation I’ll take their words and make them mine

“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”
You remind me of a June sunrise in every way

To finally finish a poem that I’m satisfied with is really quite rare and a feat
My work is done, so Lord please bless this poem and this food that I may eat
