In Close Proximity
Victoria Rose and Thalia are having tea
Under the Gooseberry tree out in the garden
The sun is not oppressive this early
Even in their long pink dresses
Festooned with ruffles and lace
Yet they keep their fuchsia parasols
In close proximity just in case
They enjoy one another’s company
With polite laughter and all decorum
But talk to the servant maids
In lofty tones befitting of their status
They are flirty with the young men
Yet never cross the line of propriety
They put on airs of haughty disregard
But in their hearts they wish for love
And yearn to follow a new path
But instead utter a stern request
For more tea and hold out their cups
Waiting to be served
By the maids who dutifully respond
Yet, even in this painting I can hear
Thalia thinking, “Oh do hurry up!
Radcliff is approaching and I would
Very much like his attention
By commenting on his jacket.”
But they all remain frozen
An image captured by the painter
Each brush stroke made
With purpose and care
Thalia smiles at Radcliff
As the security guard enters the room
To inform me that the museum is closing
Perhaps during my next visit
Radcliff will tip his hat
Then the ladies will say, “Good morning”
And Thalia’s opportunity will present itself
Just above the brass tag hanging on the wall
Under the Gooseberry tree out in the garden
The sun is not oppressive this early
Even in their long pink dresses
Festooned with ruffles and lace
Yet they keep their fuchsia parasols
In close proximity just in case
They enjoy one another’s company
With polite laughter and all decorum
But talk to the servant maids
In lofty tones befitting of their status
They are flirty with the young men
Yet never cross the line of propriety
They put on airs of haughty disregard
But in their hearts they wish for love
And yearn to follow a new path
But instead utter a stern request
For more tea and hold out their cups
Waiting to be served
By the maids who dutifully respond
Yet, even in this painting I can hear
