Image for the poem Leper

Leper'chauns

The water was green long before the dye
leper'chaun shadows cast
deep within the past

Lower Wacker life surmised on a stone
no tent to call our home
tossed out needles undisposed

March air chilled
with no thaw in sight
another hopeless night
demons lost her fight

Shamrocks shuffle into the clover
onlookers on parade
for something they haven't made
of themselves

Different paths but the same end
bodies rot amid decay
is this your lucky day
oh by the way
Happy St. Paddy's Day

Author's Note
In Chicago on St Patrick's Day the river is dyed green. Many homeless take up shelter along the banks and down below on lower Wacker drive that runs under the city.
