OF GINGER AND CHERRIES
mayhem madness metaphors in my metabolism
and mid-section
some saucy ginger impregnated me with
cancerous jagged words
caving a course/ tumultuous tract
like kidney stones
hurting like a son-of-a-bitch
trying to pass them on paper
bleeding as they pass/ passing out from blood loss
they appear crystalline in ink
most are ugly, unworthy of preserving
others are interesting; damn-right artistic
microscopic masterpieces-o-me
save them all,
the beautiful and otherwise,
in jars once reserved for preserving cherries
and mid-section

The best thing about this piece is its unpredictability. Definitely unique, comparing getting words out to passing kidney stones. I have not encountered the use of/ in poetry before so wondered how it would affect the rhythm and sound of the words as opposed to hitting return, but perhaps, it is like a comma, but stronger and yet, not so strong as a semicolon or period. I think the piece, the alliteration, the mood-inducing language, is quite brilliant.
