Icarus And The Sun

It was only in death would Icarus know what it was like to love a god

Icarus, with your sun-soaked skin and your wild heart
Icarus, what did it feel like to watch the sea pass under you, everything
and seemingly nothing all at once?

Icarus, when did you know you were in love?

Was it when you first leapt, trusting these second-hand wings of wax to guide you?
And the temptation of the Sun, his radiating beauty, warm kisses, eyes
                                blazing

Icarus, did you fall in love with the temptation?

Or dear boy, was it after, when you soared just a little too high?
Suddenly light-laced kisses became fire singeing bite
On wings strung together by determination and hope

When the wax hit your fingertips did it hurt or did it remind you, you were alive?

Icarus, did you fall in love with the pain?

Or perhaps, oh young love-struck heart, was it in the fall that you realized?

When these wings of yours, no men were meant to have started to fall apart
Paper and lace, suddenly the weight of your freedom began to weigh
                                 down your descent
And in this fall watching the Sun, your Love, slowly fade from sight
Did you realize falling in love was more than an idiom?

Icarus, oh sweetheart, I cannot fault you for such a plummet
For they sing, love is the only thing worth living for

When the sea mist started to whisper tragedy on your back

The orgasmic plunge into this unforgiving sea

Icarus, a love like this is worth dying for
