I Finally Left
Low class, middle class, high class
Living in a neighborhood that doesn’t speak
Abandoned houses on every street
No love, no water, no heat
Felt like I inhale poison every time I try to leave
And the emergency team wouldn’t even come save me
Because I was just a black girl living in poverty
Drugs, alcohol, and sex
You wouldn’t believe what came next
That girl who was finally set free, was me
Seeking to get a master’s degree to take care of her family
Who would’ve ever thought that would’ve been me
Self critique does damage our self-esteem
With God, you are capable of anything you want to be
It’s true when they say
A rose can grow from concrete
Don’t ever judge a book by its cover
