DAVID AND BATHSHEBA (IN HAIKU)

From his palace roof,
When evening had fallen,
Something caught his eye.

He saw, in a pool,
One of his female subjects
Was bathing, naked.

Moon shone on her skin,
Polished bright in the water,
Finished by her oil.

As she took her bath
He saw she was beautiful...
He so desired her

He invited her
To sup at his royal house,
No care she was wed.

Husband was at war
But to king's invitation
She did not say no.

That night he took her,
Filled her womb with royal seed.
She was soon with child.

To cover it up
He invited her husband
Back on a pretext.

The king got him drunk.
He thought they would reunite
But he'd rather fight.

Like a good soldier
He insisted on staying
Ready to serve him.

His trick failed to work
So the king plotted his death
So he could wed her.

Uriah was sent,
Back to front, with a message
For his general:

His leader would send
Him to the worst fighting
That was to be done.

So Uriah died
Fighting for the very man
Who would take his wife
