Funny Thing
Some of us have a playful way
Getting into trouble
Not knowing how to salvage the day
And make it double
Sometimes by doing nothing
I know someone like that
She experimented with a poem
Brought it up in casual chat
But on second thought didn't show ‘em
Afraid she might be misunderstood
Double entendres aren’t always good
Showing up on second glances
Good intentions - knock on wood
Still might screw up future chances
So the poet won’t offend
She apologizes to her friend
I would have shared it with one and all
But didn’t want to offend or appall

Do writers have some moral obligation to not offend, EW? I believe so. Masters of words do not need rancor to express differences. Sometimes it's best to just shut up, although in this case I'm glad you didn't.

In large part, I do agree. But beyond obligation we have other motives like social self preservation. In this case, the reason named for withholding the poetry reading was a fear of misunderstanding by the audience.
