The Restrained Companion

The thrill of a Friday night
endless stars
counted
chased

Alone in the K car
two of us
mixed tapes
painfully edited
with explanations

We could talk for hours
or just sit silently

But I was never aggressive
and I had heard that turned you off

I could wait for an eternity
basking in that possibility
that we might touch,
even kiss

The bravery never came
and you grew tired of waiting
and wondering

Of course, I cried
but I never could blame you

I still pause
when stars reveal themselves on clear nights
and I always think of you.
