Melancholy

the freckled dawn wept
for Yesterday's child
left at Tomorrow's door

born of regret
& named Melancholy
by the day who claimed her

her soul shadowed by Night
was conceived in the grey
wrought in ache
& delivered into fate's hands

Yesterday watched from afar
as her little one grew
from stormy toddler
to brooding teen
her gentle hand guiding each step

Tomorrow loved her
but never fully understood
the pain Melancholy inherited
being a child of Yesterday

she grew into an ethereal divinity
sought by grieving lovers
her imagination stains their hearts
the most vivid color of midnight

a work of art
for those who have loved & lost
something they can hold on to

Yesterday cried for the piece of her
she couldn't replace
Night gifted her a shadowy child
with a gift to move even the most stoic

poignant memories now brighten
all of Tomorrow's days
Yesterday's pain erased
so she no longer bare the guilt

of Melancholy
the child the dawn never forgot
