i believe, though self being neither poet nor artist of any kind, that this is the feeling shared by those who deal in and with art. No surprises  there, to know a poet, musician and artist of your caliber feeling that.

I do believe that all Poet's has a need for that one poem that strikes a chord in others... or sometimes within self.  That one special piece that outstands the rest, that one piece, that creates an inner freedom... That one piece that can stir within other peace.  :) Well, you know what I mean, since you just wrote about it.  Excellent piece, Poet.

That one poem, that cures all that ails,
and brings final inner peace.

Elusive, perhaps even nonexistent.
But if so, when found, and poured
forth from our deepest depths, then
what?
Would a poet's work be done?

Could we find anything left
that burned as fierce, that
haunted our soul enough to
attack a different set of demons?

I wonder, would we be richer
or poorer for it?

Would the devil's wish be
to lead us to it, or keep us from it?

I love a poem that effects, such as this one.

Yes,  
that one poem
my Friend!

well..the  answer
to that 'Then what?" lay
in the first stanza itself

the ultimate satisfaction
the writer's job
is done
and
'its time'!
perhaps as a writer
and/or it could also  be
simply 'The end'.

i too wonder the same about would we be richer  
or poorer
but
feelings, ahh...  the feelings/the emotions
they don't give a rats' about wisdom
do they?

I believe the devil
will do his best
to keep us
from it
for he enjoys nothing
better
than the fruitless pursuit
the suffering
the quest.
