Aware of the Air
Her story was such a gripping page turner
Sitting across the dinner table from her
By the fireside while eating a delicious steak
With a side of pasta covered in alfredo sauce
A glass of wine breathes at my finger tips
When I see a look of desire sparkle in her eye
Suddenly she lights up a cigarette clouding the air
Draws it in deeply and my night goes up in smoke
As she exhales the disgusting exhaust in my face
Right in the middle of two juicy steak meals
She decides she needs to suck death into her lungs
And then share it with me as if I like that shit
It's not like I didn't know she smoked but she knows I don't
Not an ounce of consideration for the one across the table
The disgusting smell covers my face and hangs over my head
I can't hold my breath long enough for it to pass
Before she drags another toxic cloud in and blows it my way
Needless to say I had the waitress bring me the bill and wrap my dinner
I thought about not paying for her meal but I'm not that rude
But it was the last time I ever asked her out on a date
Then I vowed never to ask a smoker to go out or share air
As I can't even stand the sight or the thought of another headache
From the chemicals laced into those thin cancer sticks
Nails in the coffin of coughing women who burn my heart without care
Even the mention of smoking within the lines of a poem
Forces my fork hand to stab that verse and turn the page
Sitting across the dinner table from her
By the fireside while eating a delicious steak
With a side of pasta covered in alfredo sauce
A glass of wine breathes at my finger tips
When I see a look of desire sparkle in her eye
Suddenly she lights up a cigarette clouding the air

It shouldn't be so hard for someone to show common decency and courtesy .. Sounds like it may have been a blessing in disguise ..

Oh my goodness...
I agree 100% of your opposition as the "cancer sticks!!"
In Korea... so many random strangers openly smoking in the streets..
those disgusting clouds blowing over my way.. as they literally litter in those streets where kids walk!
I do not wish to meet a smoking partner..

Thanks for commenting lovely H! Glad to hear hat!
I dated a few smokers when I was much younger but the more I was around smoke, the worse the headaches got. I'm so glad it's not legal in restaurants any more, but you still have to walk a gauntlet of people standing outside puffing away at malls and stores and office buildings. Hey get smoking breaks but I never got a fresh air break...

dearest JJ that is deeply inconsiderate
& down right rude
my husband
& I are both smokers
yet I would never
think to smoke while he is eating
& vice a versa..
I know my poems that mention
this horrible habit turns you off
but in my defense my latest one
tells of the pitfalls of the habit
just saying..
love you..

Yes, I know. I'm sure you've noticed I don't comment on them. Not to be mean, but I actually get a headache as soon as I read any mention of it. I usually leave the page and try to find some porn to distract me, lololol. As long as it's not bdsm, lol, that'll just make my headache worse, lol... I think I need a psychiatrist!!!

My father suffered 2 heart attacks and eventually died from lung cancer. My mother died from pulmonary fibrosis. Both quit smoking just before turning 40 after my father's brother died of a heart attack at 40. My grandfather died before I was born from a heart attack. When my parents died, they struggled mightily to breathe during the last days of their lives. It was difficult to witness. After you see enough people die slowly from smoking, it has a way of making up your mind. I think I was lucky that I had such an adverse reaction to cigarette smoke. The headaches made sure I never started. When I had a stroke six years ago next month, my doctor said it was a good thing I never smoked or I'd be dead. I was only 48 at the time. If you can quit, I hope you will. The list of chemicals they lace tobacco with is downright scary. All to make them even more addictive than just nicotine can by itself. The people who push those drugs need to be injected with incurable cancer cells. I'm rotten that way.

Great to read.
I feel the same way about smokers, I completely agree with you.

That's interesting. I don't think herb cigarettes have any of the chemicals added to them, or even nicotine.
I live above a bar and here are always people out on the back porch smoking. I can't escape it.

Yes G, how awful that smell sticks and lingers. Must shower before going to bed or it then clings to my pillow and lingers for days. Makes me cringe to think of it...

The pages yet unwritten require ink to flow upon them or it is nothing more than an ancient book of the dead. But for those of us cursed to be eternally undead and unloved, Pandora's box is simply a metaphor for an unblessed coffin...
If she wants a thing back, she must take it with fierce desire!

Now then, first I am a smoker, in my defense my mother thought it rather funny to force ciggerettes upon me bout 6-7yrs old, what a hoot watching a child choke however by age 9-10 I was an addicted pro. No I'm not using it as a defense simply fact, when I do smoke outside I make sure I'm the only one near and never ever would I be so rude as to direct the smoke in someone's face ugh. I've written I believe only one poem with smoking in it & it was about one of my nightmares. As far as pissing off the Underground, you have just as much right to not only have an opinion but to voice it as well and why shouldn't you have such a strong opinion having awfulness of negative experiences with dearly beloved ones sad fate. I commend you for voicing your viewpoint and personal perspective, good for you, there's not a whit wrong to not wanting to poison yourself like the rest of us fools. Excellent write valid opinion awesomeness of a solid rant. Mad Mad Respect,

Anyone who would force a kid to smoke should be locked behind bars with a pack of cigarettes dangling on a string just outside their reach.
