Let us try to be good and content,
Kind to each other,
Healthy and gentle and brave,
For of such were our ancestors of old
Patient in their learning,
Seldom rude, seldom cross, sometimes cruel,
but never without good cause.
From my stereo A low, quiet tune is playing
distorted trumpet, torn bass line,
starting to bring in the Happy New Year
two speakers the size
of pool-hall coasters.
I lay them on the dark table
for you to hear.
while the moaners
wail the doubters glum,
“The worst is yet to come:”
But here’s my better view;
“Our best we’ve yet to do.”
The worst some always fear;
Tomorrow will hold no cheer,
Yet the further we travel on
our life’s lane
Are joys we still have to attain.
Go forward then, my fellow poets
And play your parts of this years tales,
For this  statement  so ever true:
“Our best we’ve yet to do.”
May every great new day
Bring you sweet surprises,
words spilling from the pen,
for us all to read
And when this new year’s done,
May the next year be even better,
Full of pleasure, joy and fun
It's now 2018
Give yourselves a high five
for the pleasures you bring , with the words you
write from the heart and soul.
Another year has passed
so raise your glasses
with me xx
Happy New Year to you,
my fellow undergrounders.
