Anti-bdsm poems

Every now and then, more now than then,
I feel completely misunderstood.
So I write a poem as clear as I can.
Even then it sometimes gets worse
For a poet, this is a curse!
Make no mistake, though I came here to play,
BDSM has no act in my script, no place on my tray!
When I joined DUP, I was specifically looking for a site that would be accepting of erotic poems. I had only written a handful, but none of the poetry sites I had been posting on would allow erotica. What a bunch of tight-wads I thought...
But after a few years of reading erotic poems, I started noticing how many bdsm poems there were. I usually brushed them off and moved on. Some were quite disturbing to me, and I consider myself pretty liberal. It started to annoy me so much I put in a suggestion to have BDSM become a category so that those of us who enjoy erotic poems could read sensual poetry without needing to be beaten and whipped and chained to a wall and abused in extreme ways. I find nothing whatsoever erotic about rape and abuse.
I have always made an effort not to use dirty words in my poetry in general, but even in my erotic poems, I think I have intelligence and creativity enough that I don't need to turn a sensual painting into a picture of pornography.
So after talking to a few close friends, three in real life and a few others here on DUP, about their own experiences in the bdsm lifestyle, I wrote a poem, which has become an entire chapter of poems, on how I feel about the topic. I know my opinion on this will likely be an unpopular one, just based on the poems and comments I frequently read here, but since I was rebuffed on the idea of a separate category, which still makes no sense to me, I find it necessary every now and then, to refresh my attitude and to explain it as clearly as I can to others who want to involve me in some Dom/sub relationship I have no interest in being a part of.
This list now consists of my poems against bdsm. Over the past 17 years I have gone from being stimulated by bondage to finding it utterly distasteful, brutal, and dehumanizing. A combination of talking with friends who were trapped in the lifestyle and seeing a number of bdsm videos has changed how I feel to the extreme. If you are considering entering this lifestyle I hope you will read these poems first. I hope you will change you mind and treat yourself with the respect you deserve to be treated with by lovers and others...!

I was a big Smallville fan and had the hots for Allison Mack, who played Chloe in the show. Little did I know what the future held for her and that she lived so close by. The whole Nxivm story seems unbelievable, but it is exactly what I have been warning people about, just on a much larger scale than I imagined possible. At first I thought Mack was just another victim, but no, she was a co-mastermind and devised the brand to include his and her initials. Maybe she was brain-washed too, I don't know, but it all boils down to the same thing, control, arrogance and greed. Mind control and emotional manipulation should be a crime! JJ

jj, i have immense respect for this post. while my opinion differs quite strongly to yours, i can see where you are coming from, even tho i do not wholly agree with your point of view {as you will no doubt disagree with my own}.
i am not by any means a submissive, but i am a masochist {well into what is known as "pain slut" territory} as i thrive on corporal punishment that would probably horrify your sensibilities. however, i am in a loving relationship with my sadist, a man who worships the ground i walk on {not even exaggerating there}. he is devoted to my happiness, is an incredible partner & father, he is supportive, sensitive & caring... the only time he feeds his own urges is inside the bedroom.
i have been abused in past relationships, i can tell you the difference & i know that what i share with him is vastly different. he doesn't destroy, he doesn't leave me feeling ashamed. he heals me, respects me & has taught me to respect myself {which has always been an issue with me}.
naturally, i cannot speak for others. only for myself.
as i said, your point of view is relevant, understood & even agreed with. i have seen D/s and M/s relationships which are one-sided, abusive & manipulative. i have read some of your anti bdsm poems before & have, personally, never felt judged or offended because i'm a big girl who understands where you're writing iro concerns for the well-being of friends who have had bad D/s relationships... but they're not all like that... i haven't tarred all men as raping bastards because of past experiences... they same way not all D-types or S-types are abusers just looking for someone weak to exploit.

Great honest statement, Poetryman, I think we all take ourselves too seriously, when it comes down to whatever individual proclivity. If it works for others but not for you, you can't fix it. If what you like doesn't work for them, you're out of their picture. In the end, we're all fucked anyway.

That sounds like a defeatist's attitude. I'm an activist that has worked for equality, peace, and the environment. I can't sit idly by while abuse and discrimination is happening all around me. If I can make a difference, I want to. If I can't, at least I can live with myself, knowing I did what I could. I do hope you're not telling me that I should just sit down and shut up. That'll just make me climb the highest mountain to be able to shout farther, even if it is really just a cyber mountain.

Not a deafeatist, Poetryman, believe me. I'm am an activist in this war and lost my job because of it. Maybe I don't know how to properly express myself, or perhaps you don't know how to interpret what I'm saying. I believe we're on the same page as I will never sit down and shut up. Well JJ, it's now 4:58 am and I've spent the last few hours reading your poems referenced above along with comments on them, and in particular _shadoe_'s comments. Both of you have provided me an opportunity to see and ponder from two different perspectives, learning from each a few things I was not aware of before, or at the least, not given much thought to.
For the most part, I tend to lean in the same direction as you in thinking what love is or should be, at least for me. But, from reading some of the comments of others, I have come to more understanding that love can manifest itself in many ways, and none, mine or theirs, should be considered wrong, only different.
As far as BDSM is concerned, I can never see myself enjoying anything remotely associated with it. However, if someone ACTUALLY enjoys it for what ever reason, and was not forced or tricked into it, then who am I to pass judgement or even reel against their style or their love for their partner.
To me, it's like trying to compare apples to oranges, both are fruit, good for you, and the only difference is the way they appeal to you and appease your taste.
I so, enjoy a piece that makes me think and provides a reason to explore others beliefs. Thank you both directly and all the others who commented on your poems regarding this subject.
