Flipping Burgers

A piece of meat sizzles on a greasy grill surrounded by crackling onions
Juices seeping from each until they blend into each other's cracks
The flavor is palpable from my seat at the lonesome lunch counter
Where I've been patiently waiting for a taste of the succulent burger
The chef flips the round ground-round until perfectly browned
With just enough pink in the center to remind me of the blood
That once flowed through the flesh of a warm-blooded beast
That faded to cold before being frozen and hung on a captain's hook
When suddenly it's done, topped with a melting dollop of cheddar
My hunger outdone only by my anticipation of a delightful feast
As the waitress plates the tasty treat all dressed with fried onions
Then sets my meal in front of another hungry man at the same counter
And I wonder what happened to the one that I wanted just a moment ago
But love is so fleeting and I realize this ogre's layers were never meant for a princess
