Why We Don't Get It

As an observer of relationships around me
I am constantly amazed by what we humans do
For it really works both ways
The trials and tribulations we put each other through

My gender seems never quite to "get it"
The intricate reading of that special one
Irony
Sarcasm
Machismo
Scars we gather sometimes to much to overcome

For still much is imposed by norms
On just how a "real" man should act
Aggressive, decisive, and ever confident
To be forgiven if somewhat lacking in tact

The provider and so dominant the chambers of influence
For who can doubt the glass ceiling is there
Breaking it may require a fine balance
Business hours and then the household with care

For not all men can handle in knowing
The highest earner may be his other half
Even to the point of marital extinction
Which in the US should not cause a laugh

For sometimes what appears to be working
Has cracks that on the outside we fail to see
More pronounced with a nest having flown
One-on-one is what they have to be

I say thanks to the people around me
Who have worked at overcoming such a fate
Then marvel with heartfelt admiration
Fine examples do exquisitely they make
