Child of Atom

The city lights illuminate the night time sky
I often lie on the grass and look up dreaming I was above you waving goodbye.
This is my city after all; I am its grand creator.
I’ve built it from the ground up myself, true statement, no folklore.
The sky scrapers that litter the sky consist of my bones.
The beautiful fields and hills of the country side are my souls to own.
The citizens of this marvelous place live in peace and harmony.
Every Sunday I stand up in front of a large crowd and give them my testimony.
God is great and his word I preach with my bible in hand.
The angels’ voices harmonizing in the background from far above us is my band.
They watch over us, my entire empire, and keep us safe from the darkness of the outer realm.
Inside my walls all are free to roam.
I walk down the heart of my town as the sun breaks dawn.
From the good of my heart and my holy father up above, this entire empire has been allowed to spawn.
I drop to my knees, kiss the sidewalk and give him thanks for providing me with such sanctuary.
You can always enjoy the gifts of his love, his love isn’t exclusionary,
Just open your hearts and believe his words to be true.
In doing so there won’t be another day that you grow to rue.
The vegetation of my gardens grows thick and ripe with his love.
The branches of my trees always seem to be littered with doves.
I love this life my father has granted me.
Everything is perfect here; everything is how I want it to be.
Thank you, Lord, thank you for all that you do.
You are all I need to thrive in life, you are my glue.
I get up from my knees and continue my walk down town.
My skin glows extra bright today, it often does when I’m sharing the word of my majesty’s crown.
I shake hands with the residents of my great city and they thank me for all that I have provided them.
I always tell them I’m just the messenger spreading the truth of God’s love in poem.
They thank me regardless even after I hand them a bible of their own.
I provide them with love and a tool of their own they can use to grow.
Nearing the end of the city I notice an old man ominously approaching me from behind.
I may be mistaken but I believe he may be blind.
He’s very old and walks with the help of a cane.
I sense fear on him and sense he may be bringing along rain.
I move quickly out of the city and hope to find shelter away from the man out in the hills.
It is a nice day out I might just have to grill.
I need to do something to my mind off the old man.
I don’t know where he came from but he’s here to carry out a sinister plan.
He must not get anywhere near me; I must remain out of sight for now.
To this man I will never bow.
Out in the hills I feel to be safe, the man is nowhere to be found.
I take a deep breath and take a quick look around.
I feel someone tap me on the shoulder; I spin quickly around to come face to face with the old man.
I feel his name may have once been Dan.
He smiles a crooked smile at me; a number of his teeth are missing.
Age has not been kind to him; he appears to have seen at least ninety-seven springs.
The old man rubs my shoulder aggressively still smiling away at me.
Being so close to me sure seems to bring him glee.
I ask the man what he wants; all I get is a cold, tantalizing laugh.
I swear this man is on some seriously hard drugs.
After a few tense minutes, the old man finally speaks.
Surprisingly his voice is strong, I wasn’t expecting anything more than a squeak.
“A darkness is coming for you son.
You might want to look up to the sky now and take one last look at your precious sun,
because this is the last time you will be seeing it in a very long time.
It’s time to pay the price for all of your sins and crimes.
The darkness is going to kill you I’m afraid.
From everyone’s memory you will slowly fade.
No one will even care when you finally are defeated for good and take your own damn life.
To them you will be nothing more than a liar and a thief.
Try not to be too disappointed in this outcome son.
You will manage to carry on for a while even though your days will become terribly long.”
“God has saved me from such darkness my old friend now leave me in peace.
Seeing you for even another minute is what I desire least.”
“You mean the God you turned your back on?
You have driven him away, you’re all alone now, God is gone!
Take a look at that Bible you are holding if you don’t believe me.
Watch it with your own eyes crumble to ashes on the ground and ask yourself how can that be?
You’ve done this to yourself now it’s time to suffer for the sins you refuse to repent.
It’s just the way it has to be son, sorry there’s no more merciful supplement.”
I look at the Bible I’m holding and watch as is crumbles to ashes in my hand.
I notice the angels have stopped harmonizing; I’ve also lost my band.
The old man smiles and tells me to turn around for the darkness is standing right behind me.
He leaves me with the parting blow, a warning to keep my eyes on the sky.
I turn around and come face to face with a dark shadow with red glowing eyes.
My soul is restless and begging me to allow it out since it knows our fate has been finalized.
The shadow places its hands on me as pain floods my mind, body and soul.
I’m beginning to free fall down a very dark hole.
I look up to the sky as the shadow begins its invasion.
An atomic bomb is falling straight onto my city.
I close my eyes as impact is made.
My heart breaks in half as my life begins to fade.
My soul cries out…
My heart beat draws to a cease…
My thoughts are chaotic…
My mind is traumatized by sin…
Tears fall down the side of my face…
My eyes burn in rage…
The darkness has found its way in.
No longer does my once happy face support a strong grin.
