Hubbub hung from a hook

I remember

the barbershop
                           red
                                  white
                                          blue pole
                           spinning

off East Inskip drive
beige brick
a silver bell rings
when the door pushes open
brown linoleum

sapphire barbicide
a back storage room
ajar
they may play poker in
on Saturday nights

just up from the bakery
i'd get a #2
cut all over
same as my brothers

shoe polish scent
old spice cologne
football fanatics
and a faint radio
sports talk
clamouring in the background

tissue paper
newspaper funnies
wrapped around my neck
black catch cloth
draped

they had a glass bottle
Coca-cola machine
spring door with a handle
i can still hear the clanking

glass on glass
pulling a bottle out
popping that cap off
burns so sweet

i'd get one every time

we'd walk next door with mom
to Inskip grill

i'd order a grilled cheese
golden crinkle cut fries
and dip'em
in ketchup
in a small side room off to the right

a sign above our regular table read

"no mad cow disease here
all of our cows were happy when we shot them."

i put that memory
in a rubber coated wire basket today
it cost $4.99
