A Wake

Today was a very different day
The trees welcome was stunted
Not like on previous occasions
The clumps of ferns looked wilted
The grasses and weeds kind of flat
The branches seem to hang down heavily
Things in general looked droopy
Even the assembled people
I sat at the table to ponder
A passing hedgehog dothed his cap
And the country mouse did not wave
A slight cold breeze took hold
But nothing moved like it used to
I saw two robins wiping tears from their eyes
Even the wood pigeons were silent
Three black crows on a branch
Dressed like Victorian undertakers
Gave us all vultureous daggers
A goblin shook my hand strongly
Then burst into tears like a baby
A group of faerie folk arrive
Dressed to the party nines
But their faces are all sad
Their normally bright lights dim
I ask, where’s the party at?
The mayor wipes his bleary eyes
This is not a party, it’s a wake
The faeries cried at my feet
The trees branches hug me
The passing hedgehog returns
Sadly and gently he shakes my hand
I start to well up, throat lumped
The robins bring me a white tissue
The wood pigeon sings a sad lament
The country mouse waves
The rain comes down heavily
They say god is in the rain
It’s not God that’s in the rain
It’s the tears of every flying creature
It’s the clouds weeping
And the leaves dripping
Is the tears of crying trees
I am now released back
From a place I now love
I rotate backwards to concrete
And the depression of greyness
The forest becomes a memory
Albeit such a pleasant one
A place that inspires sunlight
And poetry from tree spirits
The perfect place to be awake
and so I lay me down to sleep
