Image for the poem Swag Man

Swag Man

He rests atop a hill overlooking First and Main
The cardboard tents and barrel fires
Drifters on the meaner currents through downtown L.A.
The frat boys cruise on by, tell them to get a fucking job
Before Satan takes their wheel all the way to Hell
The swag man shuffles down, finds his Lady Fair
Knowing that street royalty may eventually thrive

The swag lord and Lady Fair find the lake in Echo Park
Toss bread crumbs to bright swans
Dance a final slow one, waving at the stars.

Suggested by the Banjo Paterson song "Waltzing Matilda."
