The Foulness of Hope

The foulness of hope
Sticks to the roof of your mouth
Coating your tongue with dust
A pill without water
Slowly sliding down the back of your throat
Curdling your stomach
Forcing you to your knees
Acid trailing down your face
Stinging, burning
The faithful are the faithless
The hopeful are the hopeless
No matter how you try to fight it
It's a disease
There is no cure
Blurred vision swears you're alone
Ears burdened with voices claim different
Lies pressed close to your heart
Feeding you small doses of happiness
Hooked like an addict without a hit
Hope has claimed you
Sent you a drift into storms no ship could weather
Left to wash up on shore, alone, lost
As though it never mattered, never happened
This is the foulness of hope
That leaves you aching
Begging on your knees
Pleading with gods that don't exist
To idols who refuse to hear your cries
Hope burns deep and slow
Hope only ever hurts
When you thought you'd had none
That
That is the foulness of hope
