the lady the rain

an old man sat
under clear blue sky
under an old oak tree
from an era gone by

staring at the desert
the vast salt plane
scribbling on the ground
the lady, the rain

a traveler stops
asks what the hell
how on earth here
 does the old man dwell?

the old man replies
it's a long tale to tell
to keep it short
it's when the rain fell

the desert was a green
a sight to be seen
meadows by the river
blessings rain delivered

no further to this story
'cept the days of glory
the story's mine to keep
now head back in your jeep

the traveler obliged
take care he replied
the old man smiled
for the briefest of a while

back to the tree
desert's all he'd see
started scribbling again
the lady, the rain
