Crab trees
Crab apples,ripening today
shine in September sun
tempting impatient pigeons ,
lashed by sudden autumn rain.
They have no names,
bought from a supermarket
smothered in a plastic bag.
Saturday,afternoon, half price
a quid and almost dead,
shriveled roots and leafless,
soaked them in a bucket,
love to keep them 'live.
Winter through they glow
paying back their debt with
breakfasts for the blackbird.
