it shouldn't be so hard

what is it about a closed door that so attracts?
nothing seems more alluring to some
than hearing the word no
in certain circumstances it can be quite comical
as a pet stands outside the locked bathroom door
expressing it's anxiety just hoping it will open
concern filling saucer eyes and keening to all and sundry
maybe they've been picked off by a predator
if only I could see what's happening
I just need to know they're alright

in other settings it acts as an irritant
when I say definitively I'm done
close the door and move determinedly on
they hover - knocking repeatedly
thinking if they're persistent enough, I'll open it
like I didn't really mean it
they will beat dents in the door before they get it
it's not opening anymore
others employ methods more devious
seeking alternate entrance
looking elsewhere for a master key
to grant them access denied by me
and this type speaks loudly of disrespect
using manipulation to gain what I choose not to give
all the while breaking my heart
knowing they think so little of my rights
that they would steal them and they would lie
if I've closed it, there's a reason why
when will no be accepted as incontrovertible?
not a tactic or a challenge
as in it ain't happening
never will
let it go
just no
