Hindsight

For a fleeting moment, I thought I saw it there
In your eyes, there was hope but I was unaware
There was danger that also lingered sweetly behind
Looking into those crystal blue eyes, I was so blind.
Retrospect is painful but a necessary truth
Adulthood does nothing but take away our youth
I’ve learned that love is intangible and anyone who disagrees
Has never wept a thousand tears while dropped on their knees
And I bet they’ve never been so broken that it’s hard to breathe
They’ve never wished for numbness to blanket their grief
They’ve never felt regret’s flame sear straight through their soul or
Stumble while trying to gain composure but end up losing all control
I’m sure they’ve never cursed the skies with a blood-curdling wail
Dropping to the ground, motionless, their body unbearably frail.
They’ve yet to learn that love is just a plethora of honey dipped lies
Designed to draw you in and keep you high so you don’t even realize…
It’s not happiness you’ve found. You’re now addicted to goodbyes.
There is no cure and there is no saving grace, no matter the path you take
You can build your fortress and burn your bridges but leave your heart upon the stake.
Don’t tell me age offers wisdom. Quite frankly, I’d rather not have ever known.
You can never unlearn the hard lesson when love leaves you bitter and alone.
A broken mirror can be glued back together but you will never look the same.
You can play as many times as you’d like but you can’t win every game.
It is not until you have been burned by desire that you could ever understand
It takes a fortitude of self-sacrifice to love a woman... and even more to love a man.
