It Will Pass
Authors Note: I originally started this poem for the ‘Knowing what you know now’ Comp as a letter to my 13 year old self. However I couldn’t keep it to the 10 lines or less required :-)
It Will Pass
This will be as difficult for you to read
As it was for me to write; believe me.
You and I are one and the same
I just know how things turn out
Where you are now; I have been
You’re only 13 and the road is long
Your suffering has gone unnoticed
Nobody is coming to save you
The physical and sexual abuse
The mental abuse and the torture
Has been trauma; taking it’s toll
All your scars are not just internal
Your cries for help, prayers unanswered
That will never change unfortunately
You come into this world alone
Ultimately you will die still alone
There is no rosy picture to paint
You will find temporary respites
There are some good times to come
But in this life struggle is your theme
It is now that the worm has to turn
Meekness and acceptance is over
I know this is difficult, but you need
To rise, stand up and roar, no more
Your rage will make the church crumble
The rats will scramble and scatter
They will run for cover leaving you alone
Your foster family will call you names
But you will be safe from the evil
It will pass my boy it’s almost over
No more abuse like this any more
Tell somebody but only if you want
One favour I ask; watch your sugar intake
