What do you do when a friend is suicidal?
A friend who only professes he loves you
When he's drunk and lonely and ignored

A friend who tells you somewhat politely
To fuck off when you ask if he's okay.

A friend who constantly leaves you
Drunk and lonely and--
But that's fair for what you've done.

What do you do when this friend
Threatens with his very last breath:
I'll take these Xanax, I'll do it.
If I drove to you, we'd work this time.

I get distant when I'm depressed.

What do you do when he doesn't
Acknowledge the poem you wrote
About him all those years ago?

The one about the olive buds
And his beryl eyes.

What do you do when you finally feel
The same way but he becomes distant
And cold and aloof when you need him?
Because that guy wasn't supposed to
Touch you, or kiss you, or--

You meant no. You froze. It's okay.
That's what he should have said.

But he said
You're so stupid. You froze.
You're going to get yourself killed.

But now--now he's standing there
With those pills in hand
Telling you to fuck off
And you shouldn't care but

He once told you
You're the prettiest girl in the world
And he meant it.
No one's ever meant it.
