I hail the minor but substantive sins
That have prevailed in my life:

Painting a beautiful red motorcycle flat black
Lying to a friend about the quality of my day
Cutting off a fellow commuter
Chewing ice loudly in the presence of fellow diners
Wearing a shirt people think is subversive
Writing a poem about adultery
Not screaming when I think of loneliness

I hail the minor but substantive cowardice
That paints me with regret:

When I am complicit to cruelty
When I donít ride till I drop
When I drive instead of ride
When I slay the angels in my dreams
Who simply try to save me
With simple answers
When I donít fly to Florida
And place my heart at the feet of
The one who cares
And revel in her light...

I hail the perfect Hell I have created
As a masterpiece of mediocre efforts
And compromise...
Lingering in service
Losing in love
Laughing at hope
Lusting in shadows
