A Quote Which Opens A Dam of Truth

"I write best when I am either falling in love or falling apart."--Rudy Francisco.

Depression can be both a helping and a hindering aide. If you cannot feel what you are writing-then you're not a true poet, or writer. The craft of writing takes emotion, and courage. A courage to go where others are afraid, to admit our fears, create our dreams and bring them to life. It takes dedication. A dedication because sometimes you have this brilliant idea, one that would blow everyone you know away... yet the words just won't come. It’s not that the words fail you, it's the fact that you know the words, in all their glory would still not do justice to those ideas, feelings, experiences or the advice that can be given through words. To be able to relate to readers is tough. Those experiences or emotions between you and the reader are sacred. sacred enough to where any misinterpretation can ruin that trust you once built, and that can be damaging in itself.

To write of those emotions, experiences in a way to relate to your readers takes thought, acceptance and a type of magic. Each situation different, no matter how similar they may seem. To be able to go on, day after day with life and still have the ability to write, is a gift. Not everyone is that dedicated to any one thing, and to have acceptance to know that you will not please everyone is the ability to have thick skin. It takes a type of magic because in those words which you've woven, there are times where you, as a writer, will seem wiser than your years. It takes a thought of how to phrase words just so, that they seem placed ever so delicately, but strong enough to take on the opinions and insecurities of others in the wake of doubt.

It seems we write best when we are not ourselves. It is then and only then we don't filter the words which escape our thoughts because we are too busy trying not to lose focus. That raw emotion and those thoughts which spark a fire for a light to shine through. We don't feel the need to filter because when words are written or spoken in times like these, it is truly what we mean to say. There is no point in editing or filtering, because all those thoughts and emotions need to come out before we crumble within our own walls. To crumble within our own walls would be disastrous on a multitude of levels.

As writers we are expected to follow all the rules of grammar, punctuation and sentence building. We are held at a high expectation of trying to be 'perfect', a figment of the imagination, a lie we are told as children, when we are far from being such an idea. Our audiences sometimes forget what our tools are, when we are creating beauty within the mind. We don't have paint brushes, markers or crayons. We don't have cameras, photographs or any sort of photo editing technology or software. All we have are paper, pens or pencils, and sometimes a keyboard. We are given twenty-six letters and a handful of punctuation marks, and we are told with those two things to create something that will leave us speechless, breathless, or just stunned. We are told to create beauty, something dark, or just remind us of an ugly truth in which society doesn't want to admit. But we are supposed to be perfect.

Given these tools in which we are told to create, we have but one thing that seems difficult to understand; breaking the rules. The English language is so complicated, with words that have the same spelling but two different meanings. Lead, or lead-lead in a pencil or lead as in to lead a pack of wolves. It's not until we try reading do we know which context is being used. As writers, we get to play with wording, the way that punctuation and symbols are used. Sometimes there is no right or wrong way, because with writing comes expression. With expression comes artistic definitions on who and what we can be as individuals, or with labels in a group.

However we never seem to think of these things. Most of us stuck living life in the fast-lane, wondering about the problems we find ourselves in or letting doubt consume our self-confidence. We write about doubt, having faith when all seems lost, wonder, and all these other thoughts and emotions. We never really allow ourselves to think this deeply, because who really wants to delve into deep thoughts?

We always seem to think we're being ourselves, until we sit down to write. It is then, and only then, that we expose ourselves for who we are. We are found stripped, naked with nothing but truth within woven words. Sometimes it may take more than on read, to find the hidden messages between the lines; like searching for a code without a key to break it. The truth always comes out, though. Sometimes in the most inopportune times, but it always appears.
