Grocery Store  - Part 2

The  other day when I was buying generic mayonnaise
Which was very good mind you
I had the unique opportunity to serve the public
With two simple acts of human kindness

I'm in the tuna fish section
An older woman is perusing the many brands
She asks if I can help with the cans on the top shelf
"Yes" I say and reach and retrieve them for her

On surface this is no big deal
To her not being able to reach
I've done her a great service
I have a feeling she was there for a while waiting for help

I proceed with my shopping
I'm in the coffee section buying filters
They are way up high above the coffee
You've got to be at least 6' to reach

Another older woman is looking up
Politely asks if I can reach up and get her a box
Of course I reply and retrieve the filters for her
She smiles broadly and thanks me many times

I take for granted my height
I'm not super tall but tall enough
Providing help to a senior citizen thrills me
My city is often maligned for rudeness to which I disagree

The footnote of this little story is more about me
Both women got their products and went on their way
I lost my Mom a few years ago, her memory strong in my mind
For a few small gestures I had a chance to be a son again
