Windmill in rear-view

Drive to grandmas
stop at gas station
buy daughter soft drink, pinwheel

she holds it outside window
of moving car, scolded

arrive at grandmas
farmhouse, broken fence
dust cloud traps sun
brown cornfield, barren
windmill-

we walk to field
past windmill
to pick flowers

family never discussed
brother's fatal accident

he and friends partied atop windmill
drunk, he fell to death

dad thought I stopped visiting
because windmill stood as reminder,
he meant to tear it down
got cancer, died

arrive at brother's grave
lay flowers
he died 20 years ago
(on this day)

daughter breaks pinwheel
throws in trash

begin drive home,
she falls asleep

"I will visit mom more often"
(maybe it was the windmill)

a wave of calm soothes me
like a breeze

the ride back home
seems much smoother.
