Instinct

I walked down the alley
My brother too fast
Up ahead
I walked after him

Then I felt it
An instinct burst to life
An alarm in my head
Turn around it said
Look behind you

Walk faster
Don't be scared
A man behind me
Our eyes met
I straightened up
Body alert
Ready

Forming a plan of attack
Thinking he's much bigger than I
Knowing I would fight with my all

My pace quickening
Walking through the twists and turns
Eyes desperate to see another soul
Someone
Anyone

How can we be so alone??

Pace building
Building
He too walking faster
faster

Mind racing
Looking for a way out
Praying it's not a dead end...
Then the sweet sound- Voices

As if walking from darkness to light
The exit of the alley
Safety

I walked to the crowd
Still searching for my brother
But still...

I wanted to see that man's face
Shortly after
He appeared
Shocked that I was not alone

He left immediately
He knew, I knew
But he disappeared as quickly as he appeared

My heart racing
Tension melting from my body,
Live to see another day
Instinct, from years of Daddy's training
Be alert
Be ready
Be aware
Look around
