The Watcher In The Woods

There’s a certain tree in the little wood
Not far from my front door
And I like to take my cigarettes
And sit to see life go passing me on its way

There are those in an awful rush that pass by me
Almost running, watch checking, late for something that I can't see
Or the people who just amble along with their music inside their ears
As free from constraints as the wildlife around me here

It’s a good tree for me to see
The rest of humanity
I wonder if they see me
As I smile and wonder

I wonder where they’re going today

If I could see in the darkness as well I’d stay there late and watch some more
But as the sun goes down and the path grows dark It’s time for me to go
I guess I could use a meal after sitting and smoking all day
So many people have passed me by as they’re on their way

It’s a great little hobby to keep me entertained
Watching humanity except for when it rains
In times like those I sit and smoke
By my window on the world

I never get far away from home you see
I only watch the rest of traveling humanity
Too afraid to wander too far away from home
But I mask my disappointment with my curiosity

And I wonder where they’re going today
