No One Ever Knows

Sometimes late at night
When darkness is all I see
I close my eyes, hold my breath
Imagine what death would be
The pounding of my heart
Is not the only sound I hear
My labored breathing, gasping loudly
As memories become so clear
Would life go on the same
For everyone who knew me?
Would anyone remember my face
Look at my memory only sadly?
Sometimes all I really want
Is to matter to someone and then
To be looked at like they love me
Hold me so I don’t feel broken
I feel my life slipping away
Pieces fall to the ground
Little by little I waste away
Until there are no more pieces found
I hang on until the sun comes up
A new day shines in my window
I collect myself in shattered pieces
Knowing that no one ever knows…
