In Our Imperfections

In our imperfections we find beauty
Who would have thought it was so lovely
The person inside I didn't show
Was really the one they yearned to know
I tried to be like them and failed
Thought popularity, but to no avail
But when I slipped a moment, back to my inborn state
It was then with their group I'd a chance, a clean slate
Funny thing when I didn't try to be like them
That's when they liked me most, at the gym
They liked me for my inner unique beauty
Not for someone who I tried to be
I thought I'd be more lovable, with a better body
True - it helped me, but they saw through me
What drew them in droves was not my abs
But my depth of character and integrity
I became beautiful in their eyes then
True - I still work out, and walk when I can
But only by showing inner beauty
Did I forge a true connection
Prompted me to work on outer and inner
And only then, to be true to myself
And confident, in my convictions.

An uplifting, inspirational poem if you will because I believe everyone struggles with body image and 'outer beauty' issues at some point in their lives.

Not just written from the author's point of view or a narcissistic one on his part even, but written instead for anyone struggling with body image issues.

Part of a series on Men's Body Image though as stated, could apply to anyone.
