Canal Craft
Locks open
letting waves flow
free
we stood aghast
almost slipping
from
the hallowed canal
pebbles roll
as mule teams kick
planted
hoofs and heartbeat
in sojourn, snorting
wile the wooden craft
readied
Were that the windows had been open
maybe
all could see
hold
tines with ties
The breath that hung to the air
frost, biting your beard
we only saw
gray
remains
long hair and cut-off fingers
as your body
hauled
out
mourned over
sounds
of water, slapping
coated
boat and gawker
flowers, sympathy sings
cries upon shore
Farewell...
We watch...
Your boat slip into the river
letting waves flow
free
we stood aghast
almost slipping
from
the hallowed canal
pebbles roll
as mule teams kick
planted
hoofs and heartbeat
in sojourn, snorting
wile the wooden craft
readied
Were that the windows had been open
maybe
all could see
hold
tines with ties
The breath that hung to the air
frost, biting your beard
we only saw
gray
remains
long hair and cut-off fingers
as your body
hauled
out
mourned over
sounds
of water, slapping
coated
boat and gawker
flowers, sympathy sings
cries upon shore
Farewell...
We watch...
Your boat slip into the river

You remind me of one of the first instances I saw of such a send off- Johnny Depp's Dead Man! Left the then teenager me affected.. Your vivid imagery and deft depiction left me speechless!

this made me recall a Viking burial,
pyre of a ship on the water;
leaving softly...

I like the way the poem moves from the 'everyday' to something evermore intriguing, deep and oblique.
(Stanza 2, line 6: is that "wile" (as in trick, cunning procedure) or while (as in conjunction"?)
