The Trial

I tried to write a poem of shame
For all the crimes of man
I knew I had to shoulder blame
Say sorry if I can

I thought of Jesus on the cross
And Mary Magdalene
Of innocence and mortal loss
How now's the same as then

Two thousand years and what’s been learned?
From so much suffering
Imagine if they both returned
From exile, queen and king

Would they forgive or punish us?
For all the things we’ve done
The lies, the hate, the greed, the lust
The sword, the bomb, the gun

I looked within at partial guilt
My conscience serving well
And then the wonders that we’ve built
Our heavens over hell

Honesty said, “I do not know”
Judge and jury were out
Nature nurtured, decided to go
The royals had no doubt

Planet prison continued on
Its sentence 'round the sun
Visit over, deities gone
Alien lawyers won
