A steamy day in Southeast Asia
he cried for his mother
they gave him morphine
it was the best they could do
war is never convenient
for sons who must fight
but morphine is always at hand
telling sweet lies
the rice paddy
a Florida orange grove
with smudge pots and their smoky blanket
chasing away the chill
that comes with the tearing
