Middle Age

He’s slowed down now in his middle age
Though at fifty he realizes that he’d have to live
To a hundred years old
To really be in his middle age
He knows he won’t make it
Way too much wine
A thousand too many women
And so many songs he can’t count that high
It takes a toll on a man
He has a lot of pain in this battered body
And his breathing is not what it should be
But all things being equal he’s done pretty well
He’s retired now and doesn’t want for a thing
He travels when he feels like it
Or feels like he has to get away
He finally has a woman in his life who will stay
For more than just an easy life
She claims to love him and though he doesn’t say it
He loves her right back
So
He wonders why he’s so down
So often
The horizon is too far for him to see sometimes
With his eyes on his shoes
And all the blessings he has in his life
Aren’t enough it keep a smile on his face
He just figures he’s slowed down now in his middle age
And he doesn’t like it
He hates it
