A New Year

The purpose of this series is to narrate, through poetry, my transformation over the course of this year, when I intend to make drastic changes to my lifestyle

Oh what a day to be alive!
The new year is born, the old expires
But soon enough the yearning masses
Return with blind desire
They all stumble as they strive
The green grasslands they turn to mire

Lazarus lives, and he implores:
Forgive me, sea, I've muddied the water
For twelve months and a fortnight, I was stranded
I've not honoured, for a second, mother nor father
With able crew and ship, I kept at shore
And drowning I left my own brothers

So step outside, forgotten one
Scream out loud, with all your might: I haven't died!
Your temper and your nerve cannot break
My ship isn't rocked by the tide
Tempests are tossed; resolve is won
Nothing's lost if all is tried

Swim now, the old are infants to the sea
Don't weep, or weep only if there's sorrow
And if sorrows there ever were
They were the night, preceding the morrow
Tomorrow there won't be land, but one day you shall see
The year will be new again; the best is yet to follow!
