Tara bleeds ashes
branded Thomas Anthony Rampersant
resurrected as Tara
Diva.
born of the old south
i could not rise
from the shackles and sermons
that cursed me
my body was carved
long
lean
and luxurious
working the shrimp boats
in the harbor
from age 9
while friends and brothers
suckled on beer and football
from sunrise until dying day
i watched Ginger and Fred
in gramma's trailer
a 13 inch world
set on her kitchenette table
but Tara burned
emancipated in the north
through lessons at Ailey's
yet I was never good enough
for the company
but I had to eat, so
I danced for women
I danced for men
both wanted the same thing
but men paid better
and promised even more
though many hid in the same lie
I once did
they were your
brothers
fathers
husbands
lovers
and for three minutes in a darkened corner
their throbbing indignation
was set free against me
within me
within him
Im no longer a PYT
just another old bitch
who needs his ART
But I still dance
as Tara
Drag Queen supreme
Some nights I'm Diana
Other nights Patti
But I cherish my volunteer work
at the senior center most
where gramma spent her best last days
In full drag
I waltz with those old men
who remember Ginger and Fred too

You're coming in blazing with both guns loaded, San Pedro.
This is a beautifully crafted verse on a direly judged subject, shining the light beneath the skin and the need and the survivor to the human no different than the rest of us.
Bravo.

It took me a while to bring together everything into a short cohesive piece, and I wanted a full arc from boyhood to content soul in telling this story. And of course, raw and real. Thank you for time in reading and commenting.

Salute to all the Taras of this world
They too have their stories that needs to be told
And with this poetry, I listened.
and get reminded...
that the world is revolving on its own
and we each have our own way of coping

Salute! in deed! Checked with my daughter and she said the first thing Trump did as new prez ... took down links for the LGBT community to the White House webpage. 100 protestors were arrested, with some pepper sprayed today ... Tara is burning, and this nation may well too under this man.

Many thanks and respect for comments ... Living in the skin of others is what I enjoy most about writing. I love being a chameleon. Peace. Respect

So much meaning in these words that I am
in awe of its depths, speechless even.
Realism at its finest...

The piece grew out of seeing a poster for a drag queen show in NYC ... It looked like it was gonna be a blast, and made me think of a show I'd seen in Key West years ago (after skydiving) ... the other elements fell into place as I drew on other elements to flesh out the character ... Thank you for the read and comments

I thought of Afrikaans. But that's not right.
I believe you understand French. It's not Creo but I can do better.
Ma belle Vous êtes un incroyable commentaires de writer.Your sur mes messages sont intrigants, tantalizing.I amour que vous me faire sentir si belle. Merci.

Je voulais chanter un oiseau tombé dont les plumes étaient brûlées. Ses plumes renaîtront avec amour et chuchotements de Merci ma cherie

Lobo, you did the damn thang'! Yes sir'! This visual was 3-D in description and the imagery leaped off the page. I'm a Louisiana girl that visits New Orleans and the scenery you unveiled is PERFECT!

I'm humbly bow to your praise ... This was a bit of a gumbo for me ... the sweat and sweet harvest of the shrimp boats ... an ode to a cousin I envied - he had the talent for Ailey but it never came to be ... the glorious drag queens of Key West ... the courage to follow a path others can't see ... my grandmother's tenderness ... and so much more ... I'm just glad y'all enjoyed it. Hot sauce and all. xoxo

Your questions are answered in my feedback to the other poets here ... ... but the short answer is, I wrote this as a tribute to a favorite cousin who's afflicted with AIDS, and may not be with his family much longer. I wanted to give voice (in the first person) to his story and other friends I've known, and lost.
