Shy Tiger, Hungry Tiger

She was a youth of Bengal breed
Who once ate apple core with seed
When came upon deserted camp
By flickered light of oiled lamp.

Alone the orphan tiger roamed
Without a sibling, mum or home
In search of apple cores to taste
With stomach growling looked in haste.

She stalked among the swamps & weeds
But they don't grow on mangrove trees
And scent of carcass meat of stag
She'd make a face and start to gag.

Then into forest wandered deep
The howl of monkeys meant no sleep
She was too shy to ask the birds
'Where do they grow, what have you heard?'

Then out across the grassland plains
The tiger walked with hunger pains
While frozen still the startled deer
But she smelled something different near.

The tiger sat at village edge
When scent of cooking reached the hedge
That separated field from farm
The sight of her sent out alarm.

Then suddenly what struck her fur
The men threw apple cores at her
To chase the tiger off for good
Who was so glad they gave her food!

And so since then the tiger lives
To guard the villagers who give
Her fruits and greens and apples fat
This tiger, the first vegan cat.
